The Dolomites were pronounced an UNESCO World Heritage Site in August 2009, and have been called probably the most lovely mountain painted scenes discovered anyplace on the planet with its sheer bluffs, vertical dividers and profound valleys. One journalist clearly called the mountains, "flares solidified in stone."
